A Baby Quilts Catch-Up

Since I took a break from blogging during the Pandemic, I missed sharing some of my finishes with you, so I decided to have a little Baby Quilts Show and Tell.

In 2018 I started making a few baby quilts to put back for the great-grands, and only got two finished.

In 2019 I finished three more to put back.  I used a Zen Chic charm pack for this one and had a little fun with the border.

These two were made from a Hushabye Hollow layer cake from Moda.

Last year I had two new great-nephews to make quilts for.  

For Karsyn, I chose a simple windmill type block and used a cute print from my stash and a coordinating batik.

I used another print from my stash along with some brights to make this one for Dayshon.  It's the "Grand Stand" pattern by Kari Nichols.  I love the little Lego construction workers! 

Earlier this year I made my first quilt for a great-great-nephew!  His name is Everett.  I used a panel for this one because the theme for his nursery is "I Love You to the Moon and Back", and when I saw this panel at my Local Quilt Shop I knew I had to use it.  Then I played with border ideas until I came up with this .....

.....and I love it.  There's nothing like loving the quilt you finish and then gifting it to someone you love.  I smile just thinking about it.

6 & 6 Report for February

I haven't been doing great on my 2018 goals so far.  Maybe I set too many?  Hmmmm, I don't think so.  There have been years when I completed between fifteen and twenty quilts, so the goals aren't unreasonable.  I just need to get focused.  And centered.  And concentrate.  And stop cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry!  

I finally finished my 6 & 6 in 2018 goal for January.  I'm really happy with the Zen Chic quilt even if it did take a while to finish.  What can I say?  It is a finish, and that's always a good thing!

It's 40" by 49" so it's a great baby quilt that can become a toddler quilt.  It's the first quilt I've made specifically to put back for great-grand/great-niece or nephew babies.  The first of many, I hope.

I hand quilted this one and enjoyed it.  There's nothing more relaxing than sitting in my rocker and stitching.  

The idea behind 6 & 6 in 2018 is to make six new projects and finish six old projects or UFOs.  Now that my January goal is met, and my February goal (the T-Shirt quilt) is progressing, it's time to choose a new project for March. That will be another "Put Back for the Grands" quilt.  I don't have a clue what it will be, but I need to decide quickly.

6 & 6 Report for January

It's the end of the first month of the 6 & 6 in 2018 Challenge.  This year I'll set a goal in odd numbered months to work on a new project, and in even numbered months to I'll set a goal to work on an old project or UFO. In this post I shared my January goal - to make a baby quilt from a Zen Chic jelly roll.  It took less than two weeks to sew, baste, and have it ready to quilt. 

I'm hand-quilting this one so I've been working on it in the evenings while Hubby and I watch "Victoria" or "The Crown". The problem is I've had a relaxed attitude about it because I forgot it was my January goal.  Too many goals for too many challenges will do that to a gal.  

At this point it's about 75% quilted and needs binding, so I'm considering it a successful 6 & 6 month.  I came "this close" to finishing so I get to do that.  Besides, I'm the boss of my goals.

I'll continue to work on Zen Chic (I should be able to finish it in about a week now that I'm more motivated!) while I get busy on my February goal.  That goal is to work on the T-shirt quilt I started last September.  You can see more details here.  I'll show you a sneak peek .....

At this point all the shirts are cut and have stabilizer on them.  Now the fun begins!  I'll start laying it out on the design wall and then get busy sewing.  I'm determined to have the top put together by the end of the month.  

As a side note, usually a completed top is called a "flimsy", but that doesn't seem like the right word for something as heavy as a T-shirt quilt does it?

Jelly Roll Baby Quilt

One of the goals I set for myself for this year was to make a baby quilt using this Zen Chic jelly roll.  I love this entire collection by Brigitte Heiltand for Moda.

I decided on this pattern I found online.  The tutorial is available as a free download HERE.  

It took a while to lay out the strips in an order I liked. Naturally, once I started sewing I rearranged (and rearranged!) and then ripped out seams and rearranged again!  (Ummm, this wasn't the first time I've ever done that.)

  

There is nothing more boring than sewing long strips together .....

..... unless it's ironing those seams open!

And there is nothing more frustrating than running out of bobbin thread and sewing for 40 inches without being aware of it .....

..... unless it's wearing a sweater that day and being covered with lint from those pinked edges on your pre-cuts!

I appliquéd the flower petals too far apart so I just added another smaller row.  I actually like the double row of petals better.

Now, it's basted and ready to quilt.  We've had some pretty cold weather lately so I'm happy to have some hand-quilting to do in front of the fire (and the TV....)

This will be the first of several quilts I plan to make and set aside for future great-nieces/nephews. I have lots of nieces and nephews ranging in age from 45 all the way down to 16, and the youngest six don't have little ones yet.  That's not even including future great-grands!

It looks like I have some serious quilting to get done.

6 & 6 in 2018 Challenge

Heaven help me I've found another challenge!  It should help me stick to my goals for the "Stash Attack" challenge and motivate me to get some new projects done.  Meredithe at pomegranate and chintz and Anne at frayed at the edge are hosting 6 & 6 in 2018 on their blogs.  The idea for this challenge is to work on 6 old projects/UFO's (during even numbered months) and 6 new quilts or projects (during odd numbered months).  

My 6 old projects will be --
