Strings Galore

Another one of my goals for 2018 is to set aside a week out of each month to work on donation quilts.  Kat's Covered in Love project provides comfort quilts to the families of East Texas hospital patients who have passed away.  For this year's block drive they are asking for 10.5" string blocks with no restrictions on colors or prints.  (If you're interested in sending a few blocks their way check out the details HERE.)

For the foundations I'm using up some fabrics I doubt I will ever use for anything else.  You know - those fabrics you don't know what you were thinking when you bought them, or those mystery pieces you don't even remember having at all.  Starting with a center strip and then using the flip-and-sew method I added strings working towards the corners.

They look like a real mess, not only from the fronts .....

..... but also from the backs.

Until they're trimmed.

I finished ten blocks this week, but I hope to have more made before the end of next month when I mail them off.

I'll try to incorporate some not-so-bright pieces in the rest of the blocks.  Oh, who am I kidding?  No, I won't!

I'm getting my Whoop Whoop on and linking up with Confessions of a Fabric Addict.  Check out some of the other bloggers' work there!

Cute! What a good idea to sew them on fabric rather than on paper (phone book pages is what I have done in the past) except I really like the fabric that you used for the back. It's too pretty to hide.

Wow, that's a great way to use up some of those "what was I thinking pieces". I like the brights, very fun and pretty blocks.

Your string blocks are so vibrant! I made them for the first time last year during one of Kat's block drives. They sure are sad and disappointing until you trim them. Then, WOW! Very rewarding :)

I've been working on string blocks for Covered With Love this week too. Yours are much more colorful than mine. I think I am going to have to pull out brighter scraps.

Sandy, your string blocks ROCK! Of course you only have bright colors, who are you kidding about putting in darker colors. lol They look great.

I have always loved string blocks and have made many as it is my mindless sewing when I need some happy time. As I have relation in East Texas I would love to send some of mine but the ones I have on hand are smaller maybe I can still get some made at 12 1/2 and send them on. I love bright colors also.

Woo! Scrappy work can be so satisfying! Crumb blocks take so much courage! I love how little your crumbs are in your blocks.

Your string blocks are very happy! Mine will be a bit more sedate.....together they will make some wonderful quilts. I will be sending mine off in a week or so. I'll be gone in February, so off they will go, early.

Your string blocks are lovely. I too use up unwanted fabric for my foundations. It always makes for an interesting backside. Thanks for linking up with Oh Scrap!

I just mailed 18 blocks to Kat today. I love your string blocks and the bright colors. I made some with just one color and hope she can incorporate them. I may do more for her but wanted to get mine in the mail before I lost them in the mess of other UFO's. I adore seeing how Kat organizes and creates quilts with our blocks!

Love the string blocks. That magic step of trimming is my favourite! Just when you think a block is nothing special, you trim it and there it is! Like a cut diamond.
